While I tend to agree with the statement, the fact that it came from the mouth of some neoconservative asshole - let's just say that it didn't sit too well with me.

On Spanada

Yeah, I got drunk on that substance quite a number of times...BACK IN THE DAY.

On the President Not Having a "Strategy" For ISIS in Syria

There are a lot of things about Obama that rub me the wrong way but the fact that he doesn't have some grand strategy for policing the planet isn't one of them. Sorry.

On the Concepts of a Strong Central Bank and Fiat Currency

Indispensable tools of the modern-day warfare state.

Presses, Bloody Presses

According to historian, Gustav Stopler, Germany's government increased its monetary base by a whopping 490% during the first world war. It was a strategy that was obviously aimed at paying off its huge war debt (being that the borrowing alone wasn't sufficient) and, while, yeah, it did in fact work for a short time, damned if it (along of course with the burden of reparations, the high cost of resistance, the welfare state, etc.) didn't also produce a runaway inflation that ultimately crippled both the public (libraries, museums, pensions, veterans care, etc.) AND private (housing, insurance, farming, retail, etc.) sectors......Wow, and there are still some idiots out there (Paul Krugman, for instance) who think that war is boffo for the economy.

On the Intersection of Beauty and Substance in Film

It's rare but it happens. Some examples; Eva Marie Saint in "On the Waterfront", Anne Baxter in "The Razor's Edge", Susan Hayward in "My Foolish Heart", Gene Tierney in "Leave Her to Heaven", Barbara Stanwyck in "Ball of Fire", Faye Dunaway in "Chinatown", Olivia de Havilland in "To Each His Own", Joan Fontaine in "Rebecca", Natalie Wood in "Splendor in the Grass", and Greta Garbo in "Camille".......At least those are some of my selections.

BYU 35 UConn 10

Is it basketball season yet?

On Golden Globe Winning Actress (For "Happy Go Lucky"), Sally Hawkins

She is one of the finest actresses in this or any other galaxy (her performance as the morally conflicted seductress/thief in the BBC miniseries, "Fingersmith", was absolutely epic) and the fact that 95% of Americans have never heard of her (this, while knowing every fucking thing about the Kardashians and Miley Cyrus) is full-bore embarrassing.

When One War Ends, The Seeds of Another....

One of the many punitive measure that the Allies perpetrated on Germany (after the first world war) was the French occupation of Germany's Ruhr industrial region. It was a huge area and the reason that this was so devastating was because it just happened to be where Germany a) mined most of its coal and b) manufactured a significant quantity of its steel/pig iron. How in the hell that these moronic Allies ever thought that Germany was supposed to pay off its huge war debt, reparations, etc. with a 23% unemployment rate/an essentially de-industrialized economy (never mind the fact that Hitler was able to exploit it majorly) is so far beyond me that I simply cannot deal with it.

The Strangest Musical Pairing in Human History?

I'm probably going to have to go with Jeff Beck and Donny Osmond (the number, "Ambitious", from Beck's 1985 album, "Flash")..........................................................................................P.S.. Though, yes, an equally strong case could probably be made for that cringeworthy Bing Crosby/David Bowie collaboration on the "Little Drummer Boy".

On the Fact that Einstein Apparently Preferred Socialism to Capitalism

I'm going to say the same thing about him as I did about Chomsky: that the dude was a brilliant man AT WHAT HE DID and the fact that he seemingly had thoughts about politics, economics, ethics, art, etc., I really couldn't care less, honestly...................................................................................P.S. He obviously must have missed what happened in 1921 when Harding, in response to a very deep economic downturn, cut spending, cut taxes, and prompted the FED to raise interest rates and that depression was history in less than 24 months (the unemployment rate going down from 12% to 2.4%), while Hoover did pretty much the exact opposite in 1930 (he also kicked in a significant tariff, to boot) and that depression lasted for 15 years (it was only masked by WW2)....So much for these scientists being empirical, huh?

On Bombing those ISIS Scum-Bags

Well, being that everybody from the pope and Chris Matthews to Charles Krauthammer and Dick Cheney thinks that we ought to....................................................................................P.S. I could always counter of course with what Colonel David Hunt said to Bill O'Reilly the other night when he reminded our most "humble correspondent" that we have literally been bombing that God-forsaken country for going on a quarter of a century now and the fact that we're still talking about it as if it were some sort of a magic-bullet/cure-all really ought to tell us something, Jack.

On Why Free Trade is Good

Because it is better to trade goods and services than bullets, hand grenades, bombs, missiles, etc........Just as Europe after the first world war.

A Hard Look at Freedom

This is a graph of the standard of living since the birth of Christ. As you can plainly see, it was essentially a flat line until the 1800s. And while we can obviously never know with certitude what the cause of this upturn was, it does seem rather convincing that it started to mushroom at the very same time that free markets, economic liberalization, free trade, the industrial revolution, and liberty also developed. I mean, I know that this is a difficult thing for the socialists to accept (right on the heels of their ideology crashing and burning some 20 years ago) and all but, hey, if Bono can do it....

Is there any level of hyperbole that this fucking schmuck WON'T descend to? Seemingly not.

On Spanish Actress/Goddess, Marian Aguilera Perez

One of the most beautiful women on the plant, period.

On the League of Nations

It is quite possibly the stupidest idea ever put forth by an American President (Woodrow Wilson). a) It only included those countries (and their friends) which fought on the winning side of WW1 (attaway to offer up peace and reconciliation, huh?). b) It was essentially just another form of alliance (the very same concept that plunged the world into war in the first place!) in which each of the member countries was obliged to come to the aid of the others if attacked. c) It allowed (and even fostered) trade and immigration restrictions (additional factors that led to the war). And d) it didn't even address the concept of civil wars and other forms of internal oppression (which is fine but if the goal of the organization was to eliminate all wars and make the world safe for democracy....). To say this entity was in any way, shape, or form an instrument of peace is a joke.......................................................................................P.S. And, yes, if a case can be made that Washington (who warmed us about "entangling alliances") and Eisenhower (who warned us about the "Military Industrial Complex") were America's two wisest Presidents, an equally solid case can be made that Wilson was the stupidest (just that Fiasco in Mexico alone is sufficient to make the grade).

Note to Melissa Harris-Perry

According to the Center for Constitutional Rights and the elite law firm of Covington and Burling, African-Americans in New York City commit 73% of all shootings but only comprise 53% of the stops. Contrast this with Caucasians who commit 2.5% of all shootings and who comprise 9% of the stops. I mean, I know that you're not necessarily interested in a fact-based analysis here but, dude, this data clearly shows that a) African-Americans are actually stopped at a rate that is LOWER than their violent crime rate, b) Caucasians are actually stopped at a rate that is HIGHER than their violent crime rate and c) while it obviously doesn't fit your template here, sometimes you really do have to accommodate what's already in your damned brain rather than assimilating the newer shit 24/7/ad infinitum.

On the Rump Conclusion that a Gary Johnson Presidency Would "Crush" the Middle-Class

And this would work how exactly? By allowing them to keep more of their own money? By removing the boot of the government from the throat of small businesses through fewer regulations and reduced licensing requirements? By not sending as many of their kids overseas to fight in these protracted idiotic conflicts? By abolishing the bailout culture and nixing crony capitalism? By imprisoning fewer of them and their children via some idiotic drug-war? By reforming entitlements to ensure that there will at least be something left by the time that these folks retire? I don't know, folks, the way that I see it here, Gary Johnson would be a pretty darn good friend to the middle-class.

Note to Laura Ingraham

Look, I'll admit it here. Your resume (Dartmouth, University of Virginia Law School) is a lot more glistening than mine is (all of my degrees having come from state schools). But at least I try and do a wee-bit of research prior to popping off.....................................................................................Lets just take immigration, for example. I saw you on The O'Reilly Factor the other night and damned if you didn't dust off YET AGAIN that thoroughly discredited notion of an illegal immigration crime wave sweeping America. It is pure bullshit and, while, yes, I really do hate to lecture an attorney on the concept of evidence, a smidge of a tutorial IS in order here.......................................................................................a) Anecdotal evidence (of which you speak in plenitude) is the weakest type in that science advances via aggregates and b) the hard evidence here is unequivocal AND YOU ARE WRONG (the fact that even undocumented immigrants commit crimes and are imprisoned at a significantly lower rate than that of native-born Americans). I mean, I know that you, O'Reilly, Dobbs, and the rest of those nativist schmucks in the blogosphere just love to stoke the fire, demonize, etc. but enough is enough, lady.

Voices From the Middle-East - Prior to the Hatred Kicking In

"The Arabs, especially the educated among us, look with deepest sympathy on the Zionest movement....We will wish the Jews a hearty welcome home....We are working together for a reformed and revised Near East and our two movements complete one another. THE JEWISH MOVEMENT IS NATIONALISTIC AND NOT IMPERIALISTIC (my emphasis). And there is room in Syria for us both. Indeed, I think that neither can be a real success without the other." Emir Faisal March 3, 1919..........."It is absolutely necessary that an entente be made between the Zionists and the Arabs., because the war of words can only do evil. The Zionists are necessary for the country: The money which they will  bring, their knowledge and intelligence, and the industriousness which characterizes them will contribute without doubt to the regeneration of the country." Dawood Barakat, Al-Ahram 1913............."under no circumstances must we touch land belonging to fellahs. Only if a fellah leaves his place of settlement, should we offer to buy his land, at an appropriate price." David Ben-Gurion 1920............."It is made clear to all, both by the map drawn up by the Simpson Commission and by another compiled  by the Peel Commission, that the Arabs are as prodigal in selling their land as they are in useless wailing and weeping." King Abdullah of Transjordan 1938.

On ABBA Having Been Inducted Into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

It makes Fonzie jumping over that shark seem utterly plausible by comparison.

With Apologies to Tom Petty, For Certain

Another damning piece of evidence against the time immemorial theory of ancient "Palestinians" is the fact that the U.N. had to radically alter its definition of refugee to include even individuals who had migrated there as recently as two years prior (to the 1948 war). A long-standing/indigenous population obviously wouldn't have needed such an alteration and it clearly underscores the fact that much of the increase in the Arab population was probably due to a) the Turkish resettlement policy of the late 19th Century, b) the upturn in the area's economy due to Jewish investment, and c) the lax immigration policy that the Brits had instituted for Arabs post World War One (which was much more lenient than the one for Jews).................................................................................And even amongst this small longer-standing Arab population, a significant majority of those were debt-ridden peasants, nomads, and Bedouins whose stock in life was not reduced one iota because of the presence of Jews. That, and the on-site Arabs (as opposed to all of those absentee landlords still living in Cairo, Damascus, and Beirut) and who did sell their land to the Jews did so largely a) out of a desire to migrate to the coastal towns and invest in the citrus industry and b) because they wanted to get away from the violent Arab rebels who were terrorizing the countryside, NOT BECAUSE THE BIG, BAD JEWS FORCED THEM TO.

On the Assertion by Some that the Jews Pilfered Western Palestine From a Long-Standing and Ancient Palestinian Population

Yeah, this one is completely wrong. The harsh reality is that Western Palestine at the beginning of the 19th Century was practically a wasteland and even as late as 1857 the British Consulate there stated that it was "empty of inhabitants" (Mark Twain also chimed in and wrote that he never witnessed a single village within a 35 mile radius of the Jezreel Valley). Couple this with the fact that the then Turkish rulers of Palestine ultimately launched a resettlement policy (in 1878) to bring in additional foreign Muslims and you kinda do get the drift here that this whole time immemorial concept of theirs is at the very minimum a stretch (that, and the fact that the term, 'Palestinians', was rarely if ever used prior to the end of the '67 war).....................................................................................Of course, the most convincing evidence of all is the fact that a) Fathi Hammad (in a speech directed at Egypt), political leader of Hamas, confessed that "half the Palestinians are Egyptian and the other half are Saudis (actually, birth records from as late as the '40s have consistently shown that these 'Palestinians' didn't just come from Egypt and Arabia and that they also came from Syria, Transjordan, Iraq, Iran/Persia, Turkey, Algeria, Tripoli/Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Albania, Greece, Cyprus, The Soviet Union/Russia/Ukraine, and even from Central Asia)", b) Hajj Amin al Husseini (AKA, the Grand Mufti) admitted that the lands of Palestine had actually been purchased by the Jews, mostly from Arabs and mostly for a price that was well in excess of the then market value and and c) Zahir Muhsein, Chief of Military Operations of the PLO, admitted that, "yes, the existence of a separate Palestinian entity exists ONLY FOR TACTICAL REASONS (my emphasis). The establishment of a Palestinian state is a tool to continue the fight against Israel and for Arab unity."......Out of the mouths of the terrorist slugs themselves, in other words.

Lose One For the Ripper

According to historian, Robert Service, Lenin (residing in Switzerland at the time) was actually rooting for Russia to get routed in World War One because he thought that would be his easiest way to secure power (his version of utopia), marginalize the Martovs and the Trotskyites (yes, Trotsky and Lenin ultimately did reconcile), and supplant the Provisional Government.......Wow, huh? Now THAT is one killer take on patriotism.

Science Writer, Gina Kolata, On the Influenza Pandemic of 1918

"Doctors and nurses learned to spot the signs. Your face turns a dark brownish purple. You start to cough up blood. Your feet turn black. Finally, as the end nears, you frantically gasp for breath. A blood-tinged saliva bubbles out of your mouth. You die - by drowning, actually - as your lungs fill with a reddish fluid."............Wow, that almost makes Joe Pesci's demise at the tail-end of "Casino" (you remember, when he was beaten into a coma via a baseball bat, stripped down to nothing but his underpants, and buried in a shallow grave while still breathing) seem pleasant by comparison. ALMOST.

On Israel's "Disproportionate Response" in Gaza

It is NOTHING compared to what the North did to the South in the Civil War. It is NOTHING compared to what the U.S. did to the Plains Indians immediately after the Civil War. It is NOTHING compared to what the U.S. did in the Philippines at the turn of the century. It is NOTHING compared to what the British did to the Boers (never mind the Zulus) in the second Boer War. It is NOTHING compared to what the Belgians did in the Congo. It is NOTHING compared to what the British did in World War One with their hunger blockade of Germany (an act that caused the death of nearly 1,000,000 Germans - thank you, Winston!). It is NOTHING compared to what the British did in India in the years leading up to World War Two. It is NOTHING compared to what the Russians (another one of our World War Two friends) did to the Ukrainians in 1933. It is NOTHING compared to what FDR and Churchill did when they fire-bombed major metropolitan areas (sites with no strategic value) all throughout World War Two. It is NOTHING compared to what the French did in Algeria immediately after World War Two. It is NOTHING compared to what the U.S. did in Vietnam (under LBJ and Nixon) when they leveled entire villages just to kill one Viet Cong.....................................................................................Yes, Israel makes mistakes and, yes, perhaps they need to reevaluate their strategy. But for these folks to have to sit back and get lectured to by a bunch of pampered Americans and Europeans is more than enough to make this guy want to vomit.

On Lisa Lampanelli

She makes Larry the Cable Guy sound like Heloise and Miss Manners.

Riley Over O'Reilly

The Wall Street Journal's, Jason Riley, has put forth one of the most critical questions of the last two decades and it goes something like this. If immigrants are coming to the United States predominantly to procure welfare benefits, then why are they flocking mostly to those states where the entitlements are the skimpiest (Arkansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah, Georgia, Arizona, Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana, Mississippi, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa - these states are currently showing the fastest growth rate in immigrant populations)? It makes zero sense and, yet, wouldn't you just love to see this question thrown in the general direction of Dobbs, O'Reilly, and Coulter? I surely would..........................................................................................P.S. The fact of the matter here is that the vast, VAST, majority of the people who come to America from Mexico and the rest of Latin America are economic migrants WHO WANT TO WORK (folks who want to work - how refreshing, huh?) and, while, no, they aren't exactly rocket scientists and tax attorneys, there's a pretty good chance that there children might be.

On the Great Man Theory of Historical Analysis

I despise it. a) It all too often equates impactfulness with greatness (sorry, but I'm just not sensing all that much greatness when it comes to vile bastards like Napoleon and Lenin) and b) it totally ignores the wider environment which helped to create these individuals (it's hugely simplistic, in other words). I mean, I know that western mind has a tendency to look for massive shiny objects, straight lines, and all sorts of other bullshit but on this one they may have truly jumped the shark.

On Paragons of Objectivity

And these people are who exactly?

Take This, Jesse Jackson

“Everybody has asked the question. . .'What shall we do with the Negro?' I have had but one answer from the beginning. Do nothing with us! Your doing with us has already played the mischief with us. Do nothing with us! If the apples will not remain on the tree of their own strength, if they are worm eaten at the core, if they are early ripe and disposed to fall, let them fall! I am not for tying or fastening them on the tree in any way, except by nature’s plan, and if they will not stay there, let them fall. And if the Negro cannot stand on his own legs, let him fall also. All I ask is, give him a chance to stand on his own legs! Let him alone!” Frederick Douglass 1863...................................................................................P.S. And he was standing; the fact that the literacy rate went from under 5% in 1865 to over 50% by the turn of the century (still one of the greatest accomplishments in all of human history), the fact that the black poverty rate went from 87% in 1940 to 47% in 1960 - well before affirmative action and even before the Civil Rights Legislation, the fact that the out of wedlock birth rate in the black community was less than 20% in 1940, the fact that the black unemployment rate in 1930 was actually lower than the white unemployment rate, etc., etc..

On Why President Obama Hasn't Fired Eric Holder and Replaced Him With Somebody Like Jim Webb

I don't know, maybe because Mr. Webb is his own man and wouldn't be as inclined to carry Obama's water 24/7. That would be my hypothesis.

Not enough freaks, lunatics, alcoholics, drug dealers/addicts, gang bangers, and crack whores.

Note to Mark Lamont Hill

No (asshole), maybe the Palestinians couldn't have replicated Shangri La in Gaza. But with a $14 million greenhouse business, millions and millions of dollars in foreign aid, thousands and thousands of tons of concrete with which they could have constructed schools, hospitals, apartments, factories, etc., and no blockade for the first several years, maybe they could done....a little better and showed SOME restraint (you know, instead of heaving multiple rockets into Israel immediately). I mean, is that too much to ask of these folks, to be civilized?

Knoweth of What You Speaketh or Shutteth Uppeth

I'm not a big fan of Clarence Thomas but being that the man was born in 1948 and grew up in rural Georgia, he probably knows a little bit more than that sanctimonious leftist (and consistent critic of Thomas), Charles Blow (who was born in 1970 in the North), of what it was like to grow up in the segregated South. I mean, I know that fellows like Blow love to play the race card and seemingly cannot help themselves when it comes to shitting on black conservatives but a little speckle of humility, please.

Are You Listening; Lou Dobbs, Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, Etc.?

According to Jason Riley of the Wall Street Journal (citing a study from the University of California Irvine), the incarceration rate of native-born American men, 18-39, is actually FIVE TIMES HIGHER than that of their respective immigrant counterparts. This whole notion by many on the right (and, yes, some on the left) that immigrants are responsible for some massive crime-wave in America IS FALSE and the Bill O'Reilly's of the world need to be corrected and quickly.

On Bill O'Reilly

Not anti legalizing pot enough.

Miserable 20th Century European Leaders - Volume 3; Czar Nicholas the Second From Russia

This incompetent ass took his nation into a war (World War One, coming to the aid of Serbia) at a time when a) his military was utterly ill-prepared (only 70% of his soldiers even had a rifle, huge ammunition shortages existed, military leadership was pitiful and hampered by nepotism, the fact that the Russians had already been decimated in their two previous wars; the Crimean War and the war with Japan, etc.), b) the infrastructure of the country was in horrible condition (railway tracks per square mile were minuscule, the railway system itself sucked, roads were totally inadequate, the communication system was extremely primitive, etc.), c) the economy was only beginning to improve and still quite backward, and d) the political situation was exceedingly chaotic with the socialist revolutionaries, Constitutional Democrats, and supporters of the monarchy (Rasputin's chicanery only started after the war) all trying to position themselves. To say that it was one of the biggest political miscalculations in human history is apropos and, I'm tellin' ya', if anybody on this planet ever laid the groundwork for what proved to be a seven decades long nightmare with communism, it's this guy.

Stealing Speed

Traveon Samuel (an all-purpose back) is one of the top 20 high school football players in the state of Alabama who has a scholarship offer from both Alabama AND Auburn. Players with this type of resume hardly ever the leave the state and yet Louisville coach, Bobby Petrino, has somehow enticed this dude up to the bluegrass state. My guess is that he's probably banking on playing time but in any event, all of this talk about Coach Petrino being too toxic to recruit quality players, that doesn't seem to be the case, now does it?
