On the Fact that Even Though William Jennings Bryan Consistently Reminded President Wilson that the Lusitania a) Was Carrying Munitions of War, b) Was Registered as an Auxiliary Cruiser of Britain's Navy, and c) Had Been Armed to the Tooth, the Latter's Quest for Bloodletting Was so Strong by Then that War Was All but Baked-In (the Lusitania Simply Being Wilson's Excuse)

I don't have a lot of political heroes but William Jennings Bryan is unquestionably one of them. Not only did the guy fight like hell to keep us out of one of the dumbest wars in history (for what it was and for what it enabled down the road) he acted on his principles and resigned so as to not have his good name attached to the fiasco (the opposite of what General Powell did, in other words). If only we had some politicians today with guts like this.
