Former Syrian Prime Minister, Khalid al-Azm, On the Palestinian Refugee Problem (from His 1972 Memoirs)

"Since 1948 it is we who demanded the return of the refugees......while it is we who made them leave......We brought disaster upon......Arab refugees, by inviting them and bringing pressure to bear upon them to leave......We have rendered them dispossessed......We have accustomed them to begging......We have participated in lowering their moral and social level......Then we exploited them in executing crimes of murder, arson, and throwing bombs upon men, women, and children - all this in the service of political purposes."
Wow, so there actually was a moment in history when sane Arab leaders (and citizens) existed (I'm speaking rhetorically of course, King Faisal of Iraq and Egyptian Prime Minister Ziwar Pasha being solid examples of reasonable Arab leaders in the pre partition era). I mean, sure, we still have a couple of decent chaps like King Abdullah, and the governments that signed on to the Abraham Accords apparently now think that it's better to have Israel as a friend than an enemy......but someone who could say what al-Azm did I'd be hard pressed to find.
