The Center of it All

In the latter 17th Century, Germany was composed of 234 independent countries, 51 free cities, and 1,500 knightly manors. By 1871, and in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War, it was a unified country that was dominated by Kaiser Wilhelm the first and less than seven decades after that by Hitler....So, you all still want that strong central government?

Those who have learned the lessons of history won't.

Humans have proved incapable of learning the lessons of history.

History, if we have learned anything at all, has taught us this simple truth.

The various small fiefdoms, principalities, Bishoprics and Dukedoms of post-medieval Germany
became embroiled in the devastating 30 Year War . Being a
pleasant place of tiny towns and
rural areas where the majority
of the population were serfs and peasants still led it to violence and destruction which matched later 'big country' wars: replace the swords and lances with bombers and tanks and you get the idea.
