On the Assertion that "People Like Medicare"
Well, of course they do. I mean, why wouldn't somebody like a system in which you pay in an average of $114,000 in premiums and get back an average of $355,000 in benefits? That's a total no-brainer, people - http://www.cleveland.com/nation/index.ssf/2010/12/114000_that_2011_retirees_paid.html.

Well, my guess is there will be reform soon. At least enough to kick the can down the road another 20 - 25 years.

Van Jones, that idiot former green-jobs czar - he actually went on CNN yesterday and said that there weren't any problems with Social Security and Medicare. There are some serious Democrats out there and they're saying some serious things (Erskine Bowles, Dick Durbin, Alice Rivlin, Mark Warner, Tim Kaine, etc.). He clearly isn't one of them.

Medicare is'nt the problem we should be concerned with.Our seniors who've paid into it should be taken care of.No one,tell me one politician who has even mentioned the number of people approved for disability benefits the past four years? Once you're approved...its a monthly check for life and longer.Plus after two years of the initial approval you now qualify for healthcare....you want to talk about a boondoggle....this is it.
CNN hired Jones to satisfy the lunatic left (just like they hired Eric Erickson to placate the other side) and I consider it a huge mistake.............Russ, I hear you on that. But I still think that we have to address ALL of these entitlements and do it along the lines of what Reagan and the Tipster did. The demographics are simply too damn imposing not to.

People like Medicare because Medicare works as designed and works well.
A bumble bee cannot fly because all engineering shows it cannot fly.
The fact that the Medicare system works well seems to be causing those who want to believe 'government cannot do anything right', real problems. Medicare cannot be working because certain types do not want to believe government can do anything right. Certain types make up statistics to show it does not work.

If Ema's definition of a program that 'works well' includes one that loses three times what it takes in, I wonder what she thinks a bad program is?
One the government does't run maybe? Perhaps Ema wll tell us.
Ema darling, the demographics are a huge problem regarding Medicare and it has to be reformed. I've defended you in the past but on this one, yes, your head IS in the sand.

I'm all about reform, dahling. I signed onto Simpson-Bowles, the Gang of Six, and Rivlin-Domenici well before any of my colleagues did AND I'm in favor of means-testing for SS and Medicare.
As suspected no answer from Ema dmarks. Who would have thought?
Rusty identifies a significant problem . SSI diability has grown alarmingly:
it can be prone to fraud and is an
attractive way to 'make a living' for quite a few. Their 'return on investment' is naturally much higher than the worker retiring at
65. (Ironically, two of our local
Tea Party leaders are on disability, and they look pretty
healthy to me) Of course we see a
growth in disability lawyers, whose
paychecks depend on getting their
clients the deal of a lifetime. Sure, there are truly disabled, but
among the recipients are folks who are nothing more than welfare cheats.
Maybe if we had the people have to reapply every couple of years or so AND make it one of the goals of the program to get some of these mildly handicapped individuals (those with moderate depression, lone a-fib, etc.) off of the dole. Have it be a hand up and not so much a lifetime thing
