On Eric Garner's Death and Who I Blame

Yeah, that's right, I blame the politicians in that it was these idiots who a) instituted these burdensome cigarette taxes which have created the black market and b) put the cops in the unenviable position of having to collect these taxes. Yes, of course the cops as well could have handled the situation better but if it wasn't for this idiotic policy which quite literally punishes EVERYBODY, they wouldn't have had to be there in the first place.................................................................................As for the assertion that the cops were acting in a racist manner, a) the complaining calls came mainly from African-American shop-owners and b) the Sargent on duty who ordered the take-down was an African-American female cop. I mean, my God, does everything always have to be about race?

100% agreement from me Will. The only thing I would add is that Garner had been arrested 31 times prior to the incident that resulted in his death. Its obvious the police knew who Garner was and what he was doing.I'm guessing the local shop owners were bitching about Garner's activities and the police were there to get Garner off the street. Is it unfortunate that Mr.Garner died...yes it is.But,the situation got out of control when a 350lb man refused to obey the police.

Take Bloomie off that list, as DeBlasio took Bloomie's policy, endorsed it, and strengthened it. DeBlasio totally owns it now.

Totally off topic, Will, what do you make of Romney saying that Obama's amnesty doesn't go far enough?

Also, the racist protesters are nuts when they lump the Brown incident together with Garner.

The cop was the victim in the Brown case, as he fired in self defense as Brown was violently assaulting him. There's nothing like this at all in the Garner case.

I use the term "racist protesters" quite accurately. They complain about blacks killed by cops, but are totally silent about whites killed by cops. And they are totally silent about blacks killed by black criminals (a number that is huge compared to the incidents they complain about.

Also, regarding Garner, I hope there is a focus on the police unions. These truly awful organizations support police brutality, and the idea of rewarding bad cops with lengthy paid vacations. And they have come out on the wrong side of this one. The police unions have no legitimate function that serves the public interest at all.

And the narratives begin.

Funny how many different faces of perception there are for a singular event. Multiply at will.

dmarks, I more or less agree with what Obama did (and I'm glad to hear that Romney has distanced himself from the tom Tancredos of the world) but I don't like the fact that he did it unilaterally (making laws from the executive branch); not on as issue of this magnitude.

In Hong Kong, Garner would have been lauded for his entrepreneurship. In American, he ends up dead.
