This asshole makes me sick to my stomach. He puts the police in the unenviable position of having to go around making sure that everybody is paying their cigarette taxes (for which he needs to pay off his cronies, build up his huge bureaucracy, etc.) and then when something goes wrong, instead of defending the police, he hangs them out by their ballsacks......................................................................................And I'm still not entirely certain what the cops were supposed to do with Eric Garner that day. Let the guy up, only to have to put him down again (yes, Garner was complaining but detainees always do and if you let them up you put yourself and others in danger)? The guy was resisting arrest, for Christ (that, and he was being a nuisance to the legitimate store owners, many of whom were black and many of whom had called the police for help).

de Blasio had the gall to show up at the hospital where the two officers died. The police in NYC hate this piece of shit and I was happy to see them turn their backs to him when he spoke.
So, Will, honestly, where does race have any role in the Garner situation?
Blasio is a prick but the handling of Garner was poor, and no, the police should not be given the responsibility for policing cigarette taxes. That ditty should rest on the shoulders of the state department of revenue.
Fuck Garner RN. That piece of shit had been arrested 21 times, had six kids by different women that he didn't support...he wasn't exactly another Steven Hawking,he was no loss to society.
The local business people were the ones who called the police, they had grown tired of this POS disrupting the street. If the fat thug hadn't resisted arrest he could be spending Christmas in Rikers. He caused his own demise.
He's a greedy bastard, to be sure, to want to steal even more of the people's money in a city that is grossly overtaxed.
The cigarette tax should be abolished. Tax cigarettes at a rate the same as the taxation on other goods. That's the best solution.
If we don't, then hardworking entrepreneurs like Garner will still be assaulted and killed for not coughing up money they really shouldn't be giving anyway.
However, this seems unlikely. In NYC the golden rule is in play: those who have the gold make the rules, and those who make the rules get the gold.
And where does the money taken in shakedowns of guys like Garner go? To make sure the city pays millionaire wages to already rich men like DeBlasio. So there you have it: the police being made by DeBlasio to rob from the working poor in order to line the golden pockets of the already-rich ruling elites. It's really unsustainable, right Will?
DeBlasio is already economic war on such people, anyway, by signing a so-called "living wage" law to force companies to fire low-wage earners.
I kind of agree with both of you. Yes, he was a huge annoyance but at least he was being (as dmarks says) entrepreneurial. My solution would be to nix the cigarette tax (which seemingly has cross purposes here; a disincentive to smoke but also a revenue component) and maybe have a separate zone for venders and certainly reduce the cost of starting a business.
"Yes, he was a huge annoyance but at least he was being (as dmarks says) entrepreneurial"
A huge annoyance.
Well, at least he wasn't like Michael Brown, who knocked off a liquor store and engaged in a grievous assault on an officer of the law right after.
Yeah, the Brown case was hugely different and that was where Sharpton really went over the edge (the fact that multiple African-American eye-witnesses supported the Cop's story, the fact that Dorian Johnson was bald-faced liar, etc.).
If Garner were another Hawking, then the cops being forced to act as De Blasio ' s shakedown boys would have dumped him out of his wheelchair
His stepfather's kind of a piece of work, too. "Burn it....!!!"
His stepfather should have apologized to the cop, the store owner, and the community for raising such a lousy human being.
Michael Brown created victims of his own choice: innocent people who had never wronged him, on whom this sociopath chose to slake his own greed and bloodlust. He wasn't a victim of anything other than a very dangerous situation, which he created on his own, out of the dark impulses in the ugliness that was his soul.
And shame on the protesters who argue that Brown's skin color makes this terrible man a hero. So very racist of them.
