On the Consensus View (Both North AND South) of White People on Slavery and the Black Race from 1789 to 1860
I think that Jefferson probably summarized it best (and everybody from Lincoln to John Adams agreed with him) when he said that, "Nothing is clearer in the book of nature that these people should be free but equally nothing is clearer than that these people can never be incorporated in socially and politically equal terms in America."............So basically people felt that slavery was wrong but didn't know what to do about it in that they didn't want to be around black folks. An intractable problem for certain (and, yes, this is where the colonization madness got going).
