Sherman on His Strategy to Deal with the Plains Indians

He referred to it as his "final solution to the Indian problem." Yeah, that's right, folks, THE FINAL SOLUTION.

We note that view, unfortunately, was ubiquitous for much of US history. After the Wounded Knee
massacre, for example:
"The Pioneer has before declared that our only safety depends upon the total extirmination of the Indians. Having wronged them for centuries we had better, in order to protect our civilization, follow it up by one more wrong and wipe these untamed and untamable creatures from the face of the earth. In this lies future safety for our settlers and the soldiers who are under incompetent commands. Otherwise, we may expect future years to be as full of trouble with the redskins as those have been in the past. Saturday Pioneer (3 January 1891)" (Aberdeen, SD)

'Wizard Of Oz'

BB: When I read the post, I thought of commenting with Baum's infamous rant. You beat me to it....

Rusty: On the other side, and extreme, I was at a pow-wow once and the MC (sorry I forgot the proper term) ranted in the microphone about proposals to allow non-Native, off-reservation gambling. That's it, the simple idea of allowing non-Indians to own and run casinos everywhere.

This man said it was genocide against Native Americans to allow this.
