In Defense of Neville Chamberlain

Few world leaders (aside, of course, from dictators) have been as vilified and lambasted as Neville Chamberlain. But just as is often the case with the West's orthodox narrative, an alternative explanation easily emerges.......................................................................................Yes, Adolph Hitler's march into Czechoslovakia in 1938 was clearly an aggressive act but to criticize Chamberlain for a lack of action is patently ridiculous, in my opinion. a) Czechoslovakia had largely been cobbled together by Wilson and the West after WW1 and the northern areas of it contained Bohemia, the Sudetenland, and many other parts of Germany as well as millions of German speaking citizens who were being thoroughly brutalized by the Czech government. b) England had absolutely zero strategic interest in Czechoslovakia and it would have been idiotic for Chamberlain or any other Western leader to draw a red line there. c) Even if he (or they) had drawn one, it is highly unlikely that England could have won a war in Czechoslovakia in that they wouldn't have just been fighting the Germans but the ethnic Germans from Czechoslovakia, Austria, Poland, and Hungary AND they would have been fighting thousands of miles from home....A lot of people out there like to talk about Monday morning quarterbacking - I kinda think that this is an example of it.

"My good friends this is the second time in our history that there has come back from Germany to Downing Street peace with honor. I believe it is peace in our time."

I'm not necessarily trying to glorify the guy, just that, what was he supposed to do?

True enough. It took some bad experiences to conclude that dealing with Hitler was fruitless.

I don't think that there's a lot of evidence that Hitler wanted a war with England and the West....Of course, by saying that, I know that I'm probably going to upset some folks.
