IMO, Buckley never quite escaped his CIA roots. For a damning indictment of that organization during those times, see Tim Weiner's "Legacy Of Ashes". Allan Dulles and his ilk answered to no one in public office, screwed up foreign affairs and hobnobbed with ex-Nazis, ex-communists and tinhorn dictators. So in some ways, Buckley, like Kissenger, was a type whose theories put government power beyond the electorate. But, with his weird gesticulations and polysyllabic intonations, old Bill was fun to watch.

I enjoyed him and Moynihan (even when they talked over my head as a kid).
