While it is generally agreed upon by scholars that the first ten yeas or so of Mohammad's ministry was one of tolerance, it is also a consensus that during subsequent decades his philosophy (via additional revelation, I guess) went from one of tolerance to one of conquest and that his followers were all too willing to oblige (just ask the inhabitants of Jerusalem).
