Armed With the facts
According to the University of Maryland's John Lott, there were more than 1.8 million right to carry permits issued in the state of Florida from 1987 to 2010 and only 167 of these individuals ever had their permits revoked - .009% (with the vast majority of these instances being misdemeanors). I really don't think that we have all that much to worry about when it come to the lawful gun-owners of America (you know, those who would actually consent to a background check), folks........................................................................................P.S. And I'm not necessarily saying here that I'm opposed to background checks, just that they're probably much more for for solace than they are preventative and that we really shouldn't be expecting much once they're instituted.

Can't do much more than agree here. I do remember seeing a statistic on the rate of enforcing any sort of legal penalties for those who submitted for a background check, and were in violation of the law. It wasn't reassuring...but I don't remember at the moment where I saw it. Probably from John Lott.
I'm not a gun owner myself and don't particularly care for them, but I do try to be empirical about this stuff and I really can't find all that much evidence that gun control works. That and there are always unintended consequences when the government intrudes. Like that bozo in Colorado - there were any number of movie theaters that he could have gone to that night (some that were closer and some that had more potential victims) but he just happened to go to the only one in which it was illegal to carry a weapon. That COULDN'T have been a coincidence.............Nice to meet you, btw, and thanks for stopping by.
I'm happy to have found your blog. Very interesting posts, and very rational positions. I've bookmarked you for frequent perusal.
You stated an oft overlooked facet with ".....there are always unintended consequences when the government intrudes." This is where I part ways with my fellow gun owners on the issue of 'national concealed carry' reciprocity.
'Gun free zones' will only remain as such, until a criminal decides to make it the venue of his target. It's only logical. Since I carry concealed [and have a bit of distaste for the 'open carry' crowd, gun free zones largely don't apply to me.
Both myself and Mrs.Rusty have carry permits. Both of us have been through gun safety courses and understand the responsibilities that come with firearm ownership.
I also feel secure if a miscreant
choses to accost her in a dark hospital parking lot she will not hesitate to put a sizable hole in their forehead.
Same here, Will. I don't even own any firearms either. The Insurgent is a valuable addition to any blog conversation.
Will: Don't forget the ridiculous greed and invasiveness of Andrew Cuomo and many other government leaders who have proposed authorizing the government to come and steal guns from law-abiding citizens.
A perfect example of an ill-intentioned and destructive policy.
