Straight From the Progressive's Mouth 2

"Particularly, I want to emphasize my conviction that militant tactics have no place in the functions of any organization of government employees. Upon employees in the federal service rests the obligation to serve the whole people whose interests and welfare require orderliness and continuity in the conduct of government activities. This obligation is paramount. Since their own services have to do with the functioning of the government, a strike of public employees manifests nothing less than an intent on their part to prevent or obstruct the operations of government until their demands are satisfied. Such action, looking toward the paralysis of government by those who have sworn to enforce it, is unthinkable and intolerable. It is, therefore, with a feeling of gratification that I have noted in the constitution of the National Federation of Federal Employees the provision that 'under no circumstance shall this Federation engage in or support strikes against the United States government'."............FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT......................................................................................................It sounds, folks, like Reagan wouldn't have been the only President to have dealt to PATCO a knockout blow. Franklin Delano Roosevelt - that President, of all Presidents, probably would have done the same.

Will,I'm always a bit amused at your search for moderate Republicans. You can include the moderate Democratic in that quest.Every "blue dog" has been run off by the far left wing of the party.
Its amazing this present bunch can make FDR seem moderate.

I wonder if they'll call FDR a Nazi, too.

Air traffic controllers (PATCO) and teachers are two completely different professions.

Sorry Will, I don't buy this example as being relavent to the current situation.

Yeah, the teachers and other assorted union members up north do have to give up their outragous benefits and unless someone is deaf and stupid they have been screaming just that for at least a day or two.

This is just about breaking their rights to collective bargining.

According to the AP "the governor's plan would strip most public employees of their collective bargaining rights... Unions could not collect mandatory dues and would face a vote of its members every year to stay in existence".

This is plan B. Plan A was to decertify (abolish) the unions outright. On Sues's blog you said, "if this fellow's goal is to try and bust the unions then I condemn him for that, too".

I say your posts (this "part 2" and the previous one) AND your statement (from Sue's blog) are UTTER BULLSHIT.

Your quote does NOT say FDR believed an organization of government employees SHOULD NOT EXIST. Tax breaks for corporations paid for on the backs of working people? FDR would NOT have supported it!

Everything you've written (here and on Sue's blog) says to me you're very much in favor of Walker's union busting.

WD,you can have your own opinion but you cant have your own facts. You said "unions could not collect mandatory dues," that is just wrong..in the bill the state will no longer collect dues for the unions by way of payroll deductions, but the unions are free to collect the dues themselves.
The main point for eliminating collective bargaining is to let the schoold districts direct the workforce...not the unions.
If the WI teachers are such wizbangs at their jobs go check out the reading ability of the states students...by the way its one of the worst in the country.

I was quoting an AP story (which I linked to). Your "facts" are from where? Fox Nooz?

I was educated in Wisconsin (having lived most of my life there) and I can attest to the fact that all my teachers WERE "wizbangs at their jobs".

Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University, on "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell, said (in regards to blaming the teachers for students with educational problems)...

"[It's] a gimmick. It's trying to find a cheap way to take a social crisis that we have in this country and find someone to blame. You have poor kids that can't make it right now -- and so blame the teachers. Not blame the poverty, not blame the neighborhoods, not blame the inability of mothers to provide decent daycare for their children and get decent preschool.

This is part of the same story. We're crushing the middle class in this country, and the rich who want to pay no taxes are doing every thing they can to blame the poor. [2/23/2011 broadcast of "the last word with Lawrence O'Donnell"]

...Ahhh, THAT explains everything.

I hear you, double b, but in the previous FDR quote, it sounded to me like FDR was opposed to collective bargaining at all levels government service......Me, I kind of DO wish that Governor Walker WOULD compromise.....or at least attempt to. BUT, it is what it is, apparently.

Will "take no prisoners" Hart said...

wd, FDR's quote is clear "All government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, CANNOT be transplanted into the public service.".....I never said that FDR was opposed to government employees organizing. And, no, it doesn't sound like Walker (who, I agree, should be more flexible) opposes it, either.

Dervish Sanders said...

I never said that FDR was opposed to government employees organizing.

So what the hell was your point in offering up this quote? (assuming it's real.) The unions have conceded everything, and are only holding out because Walker wants to take away most of their negotiating rights.

And, no, it doesn't sound like Walker opposes it, either.

Walker doesn't oppose the existence of unions? Is that what you're saying (I'm not sure due to your double negative use)? Why would he have tried to decertify them first then?

Anyway, I think FDR may very well have changed his opinion (or not formed that opinion to begin with) if the Republicans of his day were as radical as the ones we have now.

Well WD,that cinches it for me,yep you've changed my mind....I mean who on earth could disagree with a point made by O'Donnell and a guy from Columbia...talk about two middle of the road pundits.

I do indeed love your typical leftwing response...there are no bad teachers...its society that has caused our public schools to be second rate. You're all winners...you all get a trophy.

And no,I did'nt get my info about dues collection from Fox....I in fact got it from reading that section of the bill.Yes,I know its hard to believe I can read while the public school students in WI are having such a difficult time being taught that R.

"assuming it's real" He's accusing me of making up an FDR quote now. 2 of 'em! So, did I make up the Meany quote, too?.....Oh, and yeah, I'm sure that if FDR were alive, he'd agree with you. LOL

Dervish Sanders said...

He's accusing me of making up an FDR quote now.

I didn't do any such thing. I saw it on a Right-wing site prior to seeing that you posted it. Anyway, it is real... the Right-wingers are just misrepresenting (lying) about what FDR meant. FDR would not support Walker's actions, which is what the Right-wingers are claiming when they point to this quote.
