It's the Revenue to the Federal Government, Stupid - Addendum
The research also examined the relationship between tax rates on the average person and revenue, and on this one there was a zero correlation (meaning that a tax hike sometimes raised revenue and sometimes lost it but that the overall trend-line was a flat one). In fact, the only taxes that had a positive correlation were Medicare and Social Security (and even here it wasn't a strong one in that raising these taxes can sometimes cause a slight decrease in employment), and that is mainly because they're harder to avoid.
