Miscellaneous 117

1) Boy, does this Gingrich guy ever have chutzpah. Not only does he want Santorum out of the race, now he's saying that Romney should get out as well (if in fact he loses Michigan). The dude (or should I say, dick?) wants to be coronated, apparently.............2) Right now, if I had to grade Mr. Obama, I'd probably give him about a C/C+. Yes, the dude has had some awesome terrorist decapitations and all (which I've consistently credited him for), but a) the health-care bill is ladened with disincentives and waivers and b) the stimulus package was basically a get rich quick scheme for big corporations....Having said that, though, I still plan on voting for the guy. This, in that he's still much better than Romney, Gingrich, and Santorum (that, and I actually kind of like divided government).............3) Note to Sean Hannity. According to an ABC News/Washington Post Poll, 74% of Republicans and 67% of self-described conservatives now support gays being able to serve openly in the military. Don't you think that maybe, JUST MAYBE, you might want to throw up the white flag on this one and look for somebody else to disparage?...Just a suggestion.

I don't care for divided government, unless it's a choice between that and the Republicans being in control. I hope the Democrats regain control for Obama's second term. We need more genuine progressives in Congress.

I just saw an excellent interview on CSpan. Your buddy, Bernie Sanders, was interviewing an author by the name of Ira Shapiro. His new book is called, "The Last Great Senate" and it deals with the many great Senators from both parties from the '60s and '70s and how they frequently worked together in a bipartisan manner. He contrasts that with what's happening today and he laments it. I lament it, too (fully admitting that it's the Republicans who've done most of the damage relative to this).

Doonesbury nails Newt right on the head today.

My favorite Newt line, Jerry, was the one about how his fervent love of country caused him to stray on his wife. I damn near peed my pants when that one came out.

You'd grade Obama as average (C/C+)? I think a random person off the street probably could have done a better job the past three years.

As for divided government, Michael Barone made a good point today.

"We have a House of Representatives 100 percent of whose members were elected in a historic Republican year, a president elected in a historic Democratic year, and a Senate two-thirds of whose members were elected in historic Democratic years and one-third in a historic Republican year. It should not be surprising that they cannot agree on policy."

The last few elections have all been historic in one way or another; none have been average. So it's no wonder we don't have politicians who can work together like in the 60s and 70s.

I had a suspicion that that grade would get me in trouble with both sides, HR.

It appears to me that the Democrats are more willing to work with the republicans than vice versa.

Jerry, here's the thing. Jimmy Carter had Howard Baker and Bob Michael to work with. Mr. Obama has had John Boehner (himself not a bad fella' but pushed by the Tea Partiers) and Mitch "the bitch" McConnell to work with. That's a huge distinction, my man - HUGE.

My point, exactly.

Wait just one minute....the left calls it obstruction when the republicans dont agree with what they are proposing....so in your minds, the right should just roll over and agree to everything you ask for.....to that I say B.S..

Rusty is right. To the Dems, "bipartisanship" is when the Republicans completely cave on everything.

I might have to disagree a trifle, Russ/dmarks. Mr. Obama put a bunch of tax-cuts in the stimulus bill (fishing for some Republican support), he threw in the towel early on with the public option (and ended up with a health-care bill very similar to the Republican plan from 1993), and he basically caved big-time on the debt-ceiling debate. Has he always been competent/reasonable? No, not at all. But he really hasn't been a my way or the highway fellow, either.

Agree completely with your affection for divided government. In fact, I've been advocating a divided government voting heuristic for the last six years on my blog.

Just wanted to drop by and let you know that I included your post in my latest compilation, and to welcome you to the United Coalition of the Divided.
