Senate Bipartisan Report July 2004 (Subsequently Scrubbed by Senate Democrats)

"Some CPD officials could not recall how the office decided to contact the former ambassador, however, interviews and documents provided to the Committee indicate that his wife (Valerie Plame), a CPD employee, suggested his name for the trip. The CPD reports officer told Committee staff that the former ambassador's wife 'offered up his name' and a memorandum to the Deputy Chief of the CPD on February 12, 2002, from the former ambassador's wife says, 'my husband has good relations with the PM [prime minister] and the former Minister of Mines (not to mention lots of French contacts), both of whom could possibly shed light on this sort of activity.'".................................................................................................Now, is this in any way a smoking gun that Valerie Plame Wilson de facto committed perjury? Hm, maybe, maybe not. Maybe she just has a bad memory. Either way, though, I can't say that it looks all that good for her.

If it was "scrubbed", then where did you get it? And why do you have an axe to grind against Valerie Plame?

This post does show, however, where your partisan loyalties lie. No mention of the fact that bush said he would fire anyone involved in leaking the name of an undercover CIA agent? No mention of the fact that it was the treasonous Cheney who authorized the leaking of her name?

No, apparently you're only interested in the "lies" of an American hero.

There was a record of it before it was scrubbed, pal.......Bush? Bush is full of shit. I really needed to metion that. Oh, and it was Richard Armitage that initially leaked the name.

An interview with the Wilsons and a movie that's laced with inaccuracies - THAT'S your "evidence" that Dick Cheney authorized the leak. dmarks is totally right about you. You claim somebody guilty and work from there. Hero? There aren't any heroes here. Plame said that Cheney sent her husband on this mission to Africa and that was obviously a lie.

Will: There was a record of it before it was scrubbed, pal.

I don't understand the point of this post. Why the hell does it matter how (or who recommended) Joe Wilson go to Niger and investigate the bush Administration's claim that Saddam tried to purchase yellowcake uranium?

What's important is what the trip revealed (that the documents suggesting Saddam attempted to make the purchase were a forgery) and how the administration reacted (getting back at Wilson by outing his wife).

By the way, my conclusion that Cheney leaked Valerie Plame's name and status as a covert CIA agent is based (in part) on the Scooter Libby indictment. According to Wikipedia, "The indictment alleges that Libby had informed several reporters about Ms. Wilson's employment at the CIA, that this information was classified, and that Cheney got the information from CIA sources and brought it to Libby's attention".

I do not claim somebody guilty and work from there... both you and dmarks are totally wrong. I base my conclusions on the facts. I stand by my earlier allegation that this blog post shows where your partisan loyalties lie. It looks like I was right when I pegged you as a bush apologist.

Valerie Plame is an American hero. She did not lie under oath. Either she misremembered her suggestion or she's telling the truth. Only people with photographic memories never remember anything incorrectly.

Also, I call bullshit regarding this report being "scrubbed" by Senate Democrats. And don't think you can play "gotcha" now... I gave you a chance to tell me where this information came from, and you refused... which, in my opinion, is the surest sign a person isn't telling the truth (or is hiding something).

Which is why my guess is the source is most likely right-wing in nature.

Are you calling me a liar again, you son of a bitch? Yeah, I got it from a conservative site but they provided the .pdf for the direct quote from the bipartisan report which WAS scrubbed by Democratic Senators who were trying to stack the deck.......And I resent being called an apologist for anybody (I hammered Bush for the better part of a year on Iraq - it was one of the major reasons that I started blogging, for Christ). I was one of the few bloggers who supported Congressman Weiner against what I considered to be a massive bums rush. Does that make me a Weiner apologist, too?......And it does make a difference on who sent Mr. Wilson to Africa. Wilson and Plame said that it was Cheney who sent him to Africa. That was a lie and, yes, some in the administration said no, that it wasn't him, that it was his wife. Did the Bush administration KNOWINGLY out a covert CIA operative? I don't know, maybe they did. But Patrick Fitzgerald (whom I'm assuming ISN'T a part of this vast right-wing conspiracy) didn't think that he had enough to convict anybody. Maybe they should have made you the special prosecutor.

This is how the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982 defines a covert agent....."(4) The term “covert agent” means— (A) a present or retired officer or employee of an intelligence agency or a present or retired member of the Armed Forces assigned to duty with an intelligence agency— (i) whose identity as such an officer, employee, or member is classified information, and (ii) who is serving outside the United States or has within the last five years served outside the United States; or (B) a United States citizen whose intelligence relationship to the United States is classified information, and— (i) who resides and acts outside the United States as an agent of, or informant or source of operational assistance to, an intelligence agency, or (ii) who is at the time of the disclosure acting as an agent of, or informant to, the foreign counterintelligence or foreign counterterrorism components of the Federal Bureau of Investigation;"......According to this, it doesn't sound like Mrs. Plame Wilson was even a covert agent (never mind the fact that she drove to work/Langley every day in public view AND the fact that there was sworn FBI testimony that her CIA employment was common knowledge)

Will: Are you calling me a liar again, you son of a bitch?

No, I'm just yanking your chain because your answer ticked me off. And you still refuse to say what the source of this information regarding this purported "scrubbing" is. Regarding that I think you're probably believing someone else's lies.

Will: Wilson and Plame said that it was Cheney who sent him to Africa.

They said that Cheney sent him because that's exactly what happened.

An 8/11/2005 Washington Post article says, "the 2002 mission grew out of a request by Vice President Cheney... for more information about a Defense Intelligence Agency report he had received that day, according to a 2004 report of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. An aide to Cheney would later say he did not realize at the time that this request would generate such a trip".

Will: Did the Bush administration KNOWINGLY out a covert CIA operative?

YES. How blind do you have to be not to realize this?

Will: Maybe they should have made you the special prosecutor.

There is a difference between knowing something and being proving it... which is the reason Cheney and bush are not now in prison.

Will: "You claim somebody guilty and work from there."

Not only that, when the actual authorities/courts reject claims of guilt, he keeps on going on with the guilt-based-on-gut-feelings tangents.

A perfect example of this is the Bush is a War Criminal claims.

bush violated the UN Charter. All you have to do is read the thing... it's right there in black and white... no "gut feelings" required, just an ability to read and comprehend... something dmarks clearly isn't capable of.

dmarks: ...when the actual authorities/courts reject claims of guilt, he keeps on going on...

This claim is a complete fabrication. I asked you to show me a link to a statement issued by "the actual authorities/courts" indicating they had rejected claims of guilt... and you flat out refused... because no such statement has ever been issued.

Will: ...it doesn't sound like Mrs. Plame Wilson was even a covert agent...

Excerpt from Plame was "covert" agent at time of name leak: An unclassified summary of outed CIA officer Valerie Plame's employment history at the spy agency, disclosed... in a court filing by Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald, indicates that Plame was "covert" when her name became public in July 2003.
