Consider that the same mind created "Bridge" and "Planet of the Apes"

I hope that the Apes speaking English was somebody else's idea.

Well, since Boulle's novel, "La Planète des Singes" was originally in French, I think I can say with certainty that having the apes speak English was the idea of Vanguard Press, which hired Xan Fielding to translate the book, including the ape dialogue, into English.

Wow, I didn't know that (that the Apes originally spoke French).

Should have been "Planet of the Frogs" I suppose...

A trifle bit less menacing for sure.............And how 'bout those Frenchies? They fold like tents against the Germans but then after the war they go on a full-bore genocidal killing orgy in Algeria. Something in the French cooking possibly?

Given the location and primitive
development of their vocal chords,
the apes can only grunt and screech. Perhaps they should speak German in the series, or
be politicians.
