Those are all good points, BB. I would only counter the talkie point by reminding you that she was only 24 when the talkies started.......I don't know. I guess that I was just astonished at how frequently her name (as in, billing) was listed below the movie and not above it.

Ms. Aster predates even me. IMO,
the reasons she wasn't a bigger star were that she was a 'working actress', actually turning down starring roles, that she was no longer an ingénue when the talkie rolled around, her interest in later years in writing, rather than acting, and a semi-sordid personal life (for those days). However, I agree she has been underrated.
