A Stark and Simple Case for Free Markets

Look at the standard of living for humans, beginning with the birth of Christ and moving forward. The line is essentially a straight one for the better part of 18 centuries and then it rises exponentially. Why did it rise exponentially? I would argue that it is largely (along with a movement toward Democracy) based upon our strong transition from an agrarian and feudal economy to an industrial and capitalistic one, a transition in which people were no longer dominated strictly by the church and/or the monarchy and in which they least had the chance to market themselves/their ideas.....So, anybody out there got a better hypothesis?

Socialism in all its forms is a throwback to this sort of religious restriction/abuse/tyranny. Pseudo-science and new holy figures such as Marx, Mao, and Lenin have replaced theism and the divine right of kings, but it is all superstition which is twisted to serve the base avarice of evil men who merely wish to amass power by any means necessary.

And just imagine Will, in.the 21st century we have guys like Beck and fundies all over America what in essence is a clamoring for a return to Church influence in all things. Including our secular government.

Given the continuing descent and shrinking of America's middle class and the growing lower socio economic class I'd say we are on our way back to that of which you speak.

You both make good points and, yes, between the socialists, the fundamentalists, and the militarists, the future of the USA as a superpower is hardly a guarantee.
