Part of the reason for the uncertainty on the Battle of Mons Badonicus is likely due to the low rate of literacy among the Britons in the post Roman era and the fact that the Anglo Saxons weren't exactly the ancient Greeks, either. Of course, it doesn't explain how an even less sophisticated society could be chronicled so accurately two and a half millennia earlier but at least it helps with one side of the comparison.
