Rabin was a great man in numerous respects (as a military leader, politician, family man, etc.) but, boy, did he ever botch up the peace process. Yeah, he probably had to work with Arafat initially but when it became patently clear that the fellow had no interest in combating terrorism and was essentially using the peace-process to weaken Israel and eventually crush it, his decision to not negotiate with Husseini and Ashrawi when he had the chance to was a huge miscalculation and I cannot help but wonder...........

First off, in 1619 you really didn't need a safe-haven for slavery in that it was pretty much accepted everywhere (including in America where the Native-Americans practiced it brutally) and if you really, REALLY, wanted a safe place for it you would have gone to Africa where everybody was either a slave or a slave-owner. But even beyond that you have to accept the fact that colonization is a universal tendency not just amongst humans (the Slavs, the Goths, the Saxons, the Vandals, the Seljuk Turks, and, yes, the Zulus, too) but all throughout the animal kingdom......and so to proclaim that this one population (those big, bad, nasty white Europeans) had an especially venal purpose behind their motivations to migrate strikes me as just more white-hating but, please, go ahead and read her treatise and make up your own mind.

I never knew that until recently (or if I did know it I'd completely forgotten it). I had just assumed that when the West had fallen in 476 (the descent had actually started much earlier - the freezing over of the Rhine in 405, for example - but being that this is the date most typically used, I'll go along) all of Italy was gone forever. Of course it could have ended up even better (in terms of reclaiming more of the Western half) for the Byzantines had they not had to fend off the Muslims for 800 years but, still, quite impressive winning that Gothic War and at least getting some of their shit back.

Yeah, this is very elementary. As the article adroitly points out, the more successful that a strategy is at temporarily suppressing an infectious disease, the larger the epidemic is likely to be in the long run (in the absence of a vaccination) due to a lesser buildup of population immunity and the fact that unless you put the elderly into a totally antiseptic environment, a great deal of them will still get sick over time. What we clearly should have done is quarantine the vulnerable and let this thing pass through the healthy population so that we could have developed this herd immunity......because short of that unicorn vaccination, it's our only real option at this point.
