Trading Circles

Randy Edsall to Maryland? That just doesn't make any sense. It doesn't make sense for Edsall OR Maryland. It doesn't make sense for Edsall in that it really isn't a significant advancement (a scootch over a lateral move, at best) for him. Yes, the ACC is a little bit better/more stable than the Big East currently is. But Maryland, folks - they haven't been a football power since the 1950s (save, of course, for several years here and there; the early '80s with Randy White and the first three years of Ralph Friedgen's tenure as head coach a decade ago). And it doesn't make sense for Maryland in that, while, yes, Mr. Edsall is in fact a decent coach, he doesn't seem to bring to Maryland what THEY need; more excitement, a boost in attendance, a capacity to recruit that rich abundance of local talent, etc.. I don't know there, me-buckos, to me, this basically looks just like a change for the sake of a change - FOR BOTH.....Of course, what in the hell do I know, right?

...a change for the sake of a change...

Well, the deluded Gamecock folks follow that advice religiously. Mainly because they still believe in some sort of college football savior that will bring home a national championship they deserve.

They give a head coach about five years then run his ass out of town.

Will: Apparently Edsall grew up in Pennsylvania close to the Maryland campus...his dad took him to games, etc.. I presume there is some sort of emotional attachment if you take Edsall at his word...what Edsall does with his new opprtunity concerns me less than what is going to happen to the future of UCONN football...some of the "candidates" aren't exactly household names. My guess is we will become the Duke of the Big East in football....sigh

Makes perfect sense for Edsall...he sees TCU coming down the trail and got the hell out of Dodge.

Double b - Clemson has been known to be pretty tough on coaches, too. They ran off Ken Hatfield after a 9-3 season, and 2 1/2 years ago fired Tommy Bowden after going 72-45, 0 losing seasons, and a 7-2 record vs. South Carolina. Brutal. Yes, his teams often underachieved, but he was a great recruiter and you had to think that EVENTUALLY...They're still waiting for the next Danny Ford, evidently.......Marcus - Hopefully, it will work out for all involved. I'm not quite as dour as you are about UConn's future. Some of these candidates are top-flight coordinators (former BC coach, Jeff Jagodzinski, being one) and they've even been throwing Marc Mangino's name around. Yes, he was a failure in the NFL. But so, too, was Pete Carrol the first time around. AND.....I've also been hearing Mike Leach's name being mentioned. Maybe UConn will have the cajones to do what Miami and Maryland couldn't do and hire "the pirate".......Rusty - Yeah, TCU was a great get for the Big East. Maybe their presence will help the other 8 teams to recruit/compete better, etc..

I don't know. About this topic certainly more than me. Then again, what the hell do I CARE? It's not as if football is at all an interesting pastime to follow. It most certainly is not. It is incredibly BOOOORRRRIIIINNNNNG.
