Mrs. Jefferson? Martha died 12 years before husband Thomas became president and Dolly Madison served as WH hostess. Sometimes his daughter Martha did as well. Throw in Sally Hemmings and the the dozens of toddlers that died in infancy and the family history is a complicated one. Since Buchanan was a confirmed bachelor, perhaps the wisest of his decisions, his niece acted as WH hostess. We presume that since neither President had a first lady, we may admire/abhor their non-existent tenures?
