Actually, there are a lot of good ones back then (the 60s and 70s), huh; Fred Biletnikoff and Cliff Branch with the Raiders, Lynn Swann and John Stallworth with the Steelers, Tony Hill and Drew Pearson with the Cowboys, Raymond Berry and Jimmy Orr with the Colts, etc.? Nowadays in the NFL you have wide receivers averaging 10-12 yards a catch. It's practically a hand-off, for Christ.
Not so fast there Will.QB's are throwing for more yardage then ever before.In the 60's and 70's if a QB threw for 3,000 yards it was uncommon.Now 3,000 is average. Back then a 300 yard game was rare,today its nothing.
I hear you, Russ, but look at the average yards per completion. Back in the old days, guys like Bob Hayes and Lance Alworth used to average 20 yards a catch almost every season. Yeah, the quarterback would throw a dink or a screen every once in a while, but he'd throw it to the fullback and not to some fleet-footed receiver.
Yards per completion does'nt mean much if you only catch 40 balls.
The present NFL is a QB driven league.IMO todays receivers are bigger and faster.There are'nt any track stars making it in the NFL these days,but todays wideouts on average are better.Yards after catch (YAC)is a much more important stat in todays game.
Of course the athletes are better (though Hayes and Alworth both ran 9.4 hundreds as I recall) but padding your completion % with a bunch of passes that I could complete isn't all that impressive to me. I guess that you're going to have to call me nostalgic on this one, Russ.

I will concede that that Saints-49ers (playoff) game was an instant classic and that even I like Drew Brees.
