If fact one could stress that liberals (guys like Walter Mondale, Ralph Abernathy, and Cesar Chavez, for example) were at one point BETTER than conservatives on this issue in that they were beholden to the labor unions while conservatives attended to the chamber of commerce. Unfortunately they crunched the numbers and perceived that they could get more votes with destitute third-world immigrants than they could from an ever deflating labor population and, guess what, they were right.
