And back then the black poverty rate was more than three times greater than it currently is (https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2023/09/black-poverty-rate.html), a strong INVERSE correlation (poverty CAUSES crime, we've been led to believe). Clearly we need to look at different variables, such as, I don't know, maybe the fact that out-of-wedlock births back then were a quarter of what they are now. Seems like a plausible place to start, no?
