The number may not be 100% accurate but it's a lot closer to the truth than Baker's Assertion that 120 of the 173 killed were able-bodied young men of fighting age, in that a) it was a ridiculous number even by U.S. military standards and b) Pease's statistic was buttressed by other credible reports on the incident while Baker's wasn't.
And if that wasn't bad enough, the attack wasn't even directed at the right camp. Yes, the renegade Indian, Owl Child (guilty of numerous atrocities himself), and his fellow marauders had camped there previously but moved out as fast as they could (probably sensing the cavalry approach, I'm guessing). Unfortunately the old Colonel was shitfaced and even when informed of this possibility said, "fuck it, let's kill the bastards anyway (or words to that effect)".
Oh, and if you're wondering about possible repercussions, yeah, there weren't any (save for being pilloried in the East, that is). Big surprise, huh?
