That's not exactly my idea of philanthropy (fighting malaria, helping to provide electricity, getting golden rice to people, etc. being a little more like it in my estimation). Sorry.
The Soros rumor mill has that at million, not billion . He funds a lot of stuff all over the world, including a lot of $$ to defend Gypsies, human rights and public health. As you have noted previously, great wealth provides the opportunity for philanthropy- Vanderbilts, Carnegies, Rockefellers, etc. To the extent that criticizing such, you observed that if " it ever gets to the point in this country where doing great turns you into a pariah, then we are fucked.."
